47/52 - Marble

Marble
Marble

This week's shot is a bit late as I was away over the long weekend. I decided to photograph a marble and I wanted the colour to drop off towards the left of frame. I picked a "Sangria" coloured gel to create the background colour. If I were to shoot this photograph again, I would try and get a bit more colour on the right hand side of the marble.

Lighting setup inside.

I used a snooted Canon 430 EX II fired at 1/8 to light the image. I tried firing the stobe in a number of positions, including straight down at the marble, before I settled on firing it straight into the background. I'm not sure how to expose the right hand side of the marble. Should I use another flash or should I just re-position the snooted strobe?

I'll probably end up experimenting with this one after the project finishes. The setup, as you can see, is quite straight forward.

24/52 - Eton Mess

Eton Mess
Eton Mess

We had Eton Mess over the weekend and it was a no brainer as far as what this weeks shot was going to be. The dish has been known by this name since the 19th century and is traditionally served at Eton college's annual cricket match against Winchester College.

Lighting info and setup shots after the jump.

I used a two light setup for this shot.

A canon 580 EX II was fired at 1/4th from behind the subject on the left of the camera. The light from this flash was bounced onto the front of the subject using a white foam-core board.
I used the Canon 430 EX II, fired at 1/64th, from the right of camera to create the highlight at the botto of the glass and create some separation from the background.

Although a sheet of glass is visible in the setup shot, I didn't use it when I captured the final photograph.

If I was shooting this again I would like to fire the 580 EX into a reflective umbrella from the right of the subject and use a white A4 paper to bounce light onto the bottom of the glass. I'm still quite happy with this shot.

Christmas in Colombo

We had a blast over Christmas as we spent a month over December and January in Colombo with family and friends. It was also a hell of a lot busier than Sydney was the year before! I captured around 70GB of images (most of them were shots of birds) while I was away and have lots of material for more animal and bird posts. However with this post I thought I'd share something a bit different for a change. More Christmas images after the jump.

There aren't too many shots of the food......... probably because I was eating! Here's a shot of some Brandy Butter which I managed to capture.

and the Christmas Pudding being lit.
